<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Waste? Materials.</image:title>
<image:caption>As the main starting point of the design, the waste material was analysed. There were several thousands of larch and pine strips in a ratio of two to one. These strips had been discarded because they were too warped or bended or because they contained cracks, and couldn’t be processed into glue-laminated trusses. As a first step, to reduce the absolute warping and bending per element, the strips were sorted, transported, dried and sawn into 30x40mm battens of 300 and 500mm long to within a tolerance of 0.5 mm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Make it.</image:title>
<image:caption>With a recently acquired second hand ABB6400 robotic arm on a 5 meter track, pneumatic grippers and some peripheral machinery, it was possible to create these incredibly complex elements. It involved multiple sawing, drilling and dowel-placement actions for each element to be manufactured and put into place. To maintain the required accuracy and stay within the production process size limits, the design was subdivided into 1200mm wide segments. These were assembled on-site.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5edf9943860e3269b94f4393/1592928698315-P4CNS8IEZTMM7T442XR2/Circular+Experience+Design.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Concept: closing the loop</image:title>
<image:caption>ABN Amro asked RAP to rethink the aesthetics of sustainability (which had quite a dull reputation) and improve a specific part of the project: the underground entrance staircase leading into souterrain containing an art exhibition space and meeting rooms for employees. After closer inspection, RAP noticed that the secondary entrance was used a lot by employees but only featured a bare concrete staircase and didn’t communicate the importance and sustainable spirit that Circl has. At the same time the discovery was made that a lot of waste material remained at the factory where the laminated load bearing structure had been made. In line with the circular design paradigm that dictates that these ‘material loops’ should be closed we decided to design wall- and balustrade elements that would improve the acoustic performance of the space, would close the loop on this specific waste-stream but would also enhance the bank’s employees’ experience of the paradigm shift from linear to circular economy.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5edf9943860e3269b94f4393/1592929512389-74AORYGB222GQ1NO8AUO/Detail+of+Circular+Experience</image:loc>
<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Expressive detailing</image:title>
<image:caption>With these material dimensions and quantity as a starting point, a design was made that would adapt to the floor, walls, staircase and handrail but would try to be as expressive as possible where it had space to do so. The design contains about 4000 vertical pine components and 6000 horizontal larch components. Variation in multiple design variables generated a complex ornament that can only originate from the merging of parametric design and robotic manufacturing. For this purpose, a two-directional stacked component system was imagined, where components would become flush near the handrail of the staircase but would fan out the further away they got from this constraint. The pattern would fade out along the curved section of the wall as to end completely flat next to the entrance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Circl. A circular pavilion by ABN Amro.</image:title>
<image:caption>Since decades, the ABN Amro bank was planning to build a pavilion outside its main office, a tall sleek office tower in Amsterdam’s financial district. As one of the largest real-estate banks in the Netherlands it felt the responsibility to take the lead in the transition towards a more sustainable, even circular, future of the construction industry. As part of this vision, they decided to build Circl , a multi-purpose, public pavilion (designed by Architecten Cie) built following the circular economy principles. These principles dictate that through better design, maintenance, repair, reuse and recycling, products and buildings can last longer. This is a fundamental shift away from the traditional linear economy where products are disposed of after use.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5edf9943860e3269b94f4393/1593010105132-2Y7RRHQQL84VVASVNTB2/Join_ABN_Amro_Circular_Experience</image:loc>
<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Design for disassembly</image:title>
<image:caption>After experimenting with tacking and glueing, which would require little peripheral machinery, the final detail was a bit more complicated. To adhere strictly to the principles of circular design, the battens are connected using glue-free dowel joints to guarantee its structural safety as a balustrade. Threaded metal rods are used to post-tension the separate wall- and balustrade elements after robotically stacking them. This increased the stability and prevents that someone can pull off battens at the exposed sides of the elements. An added advantage was that, by only using glue-free joints and mechanical fasteners, the entire project can be taken apart after its functional lifespan into two separate material streams: around 10.000 wooden battens, 50.000 dowels and 150 metal rods.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Concluding</image:title>
<image:caption>The Circular Experience shows that, even though being a relatively small addition to the Circl pavilion, sustainability doesn’t have to be dull or boring and that it can thrive in relationship to new technological advancements. It demonstrates the versatility of computational design and robotic fabrication to accommodate the imperfections of reclaimed natural timber to achieve a richness and expression that is uncommon in today's construction industry.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Circular Experience - Crash it and set it on fire.</image:title>
<image:caption>Although being made entirely out of solid wood, which of itself pass the building code fire regulations, the Circular Experience had to be tested both structurally as a balustrade as well as on fire-resistance because of its inherent complexity. It had to comply to the highest fire-resistance class because of its location along an escape route. Since it consists of thousands of unique wooden battens both its structural performance and fire resistance couldn’t be validated from a computational model. After many trial tests, the pine and larch needed to be both impregnated and coated with biobased fire-retardant to receive a permit. The load-testing proved much easier, with the thousands of dowels joints providing sufficient resistance to impact.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 3DCP Water Taxi Stop - 3D Concrete Printing</image:title>
<image:caption>It´s main shape is constructed using 3D concrete printing technology, a longstanding collaboration between RAP and concrete manufacturer Bruil. This technology allows for large variations in shape, texture and pattern on a per-item basis without additional cost. The cantilever of the water taxi stop benefits from the newly acquired ability to print slopes up to 25 degrees.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With 40 locations scattered across Rotterdam’s riverbanks, the parametric design allows for unique stops to be generated within the same design space and manufactured with equal ease. The first Abri will be built on the Marconistraat in Rotterdam and will serve as an inspiring element within the newly developed Merwe-Vierhaven district, also known as the Makers District. The first prototype has been printed, assembled and tested. A new, final print is in the making.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 3DCP Water Taxi Stop - Connecting the city</image:title>
<image:caption>The city of Rotterdam is split by the river de Nieuwe Maas. A small fleet of water taxis allow passengers to quickly travel between remote and central parts of the city while enjoying the impressive waterside view of the city. In contrast to those using regular public transport, water taxi passengers are often waiting outside, exposed to rain and wind. For this specific case, Studio RAP made a universal design solution that takes into account the large variety of neighbourhoods the water taxis serve.</image:caption>

<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5edf9943860e3269b94f4393/1593356978538-ZYM92WNKM9SQM3OM8SBM/3DCP_Abri_render</image:loc>
<image:title>Work - 3DCP Water Taxi Stop - Parametric design for all</image:title>
<image:caption>The Abri design is interesting on multiple scales. Most prominently, it provides passengers with shelter from the rain whilst being recognizable, inviting and transparent. It’s arching shape, with a free span of 3.5m and cover for up to eight passengers, combines a feeling of security with a wide view of the bay. It’s elegant shape remains captivating at closer inspection by the diamond-shaped cushions that follow from the intersecting structural members. At the smallest scale intricate printing patterns convey a distinct feel of digital craftsmanship. Being a rule-based design, the Abri allows these three layers of design to be customized for each specific neighbourhood without losing production efficiency or structural performance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 3DCP Water Taxi Stop - Overcoming structural issues</image:title>
<image:caption>The abri pushes current concrete printing technology to its limits. The shell consists of two intersecting surfaces that, by weaving in and out, create tunnels for threaded post-tensioning bars. These post-tensioning bars are essential since there is no traditional rebar to make the structure stiff. The bars string the three prefabricated parts together and connect them to the foundation. The tension that results at the curved outer edge of the abri is introduced into the concrete surfaces using 24 unique mounting plates.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - New Delft Blue - Opportunities.</image:title>
<image:caption>The potential for 3D printed ceramics goes far beyond the applications within Delft. Ceramic is a high-quality cladding material that offers low maintenance and high durability in even the most corrosive environments i.e. desert and sea locations. If you’d like to experiment with 3D clay printing, feel free to get in touch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - New Delft Blue - Indicating a threshold</image:title>
<image:caption>The large gates, measuring four meters wide, eight meters high and 12 meters deep, cover a large public staircase that indicate the communal character of the courtyard. The overall design of the ceramic cladding balances the two functions of the gates: to indicate a clear separation between public and communal while at the same time guiding ones attention to the courtyard. The deep blue colour reflects the connection to Delft Blue porcelain and the surrounding canals and contrast the earth-toned masonry covering the building to indicate a threshold. The ornamental pattern mitigates between the straight sections of the staircase and the mainly horizontal logic of the gate and guides viewers' eyes towards the scene at its center.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - New Delft Blue - Delft Blue Heritage</image:title>
<image:caption>The lush communal courtyard of the PoortMeesters building block, which is part of the large scale redevelopment Nieuw Delft, is framed by two large entry gates. These refer to Delft as a medieval trading city with its many city gates and provide passers-by with a glimpse of the idyllic life going on inside. The New Delft Blue gates take their inspiration from traditional Delft Blue porcelain plates. The design vocabulary of these plates has changed radically over the centuries from copying Chinese and Japanese Oriental designs to making contemporary Dutch designs. The differentiation between a decorative, abstracted frame and picturesque scene, however, has been a recurring division. This division is the starting point for the New Delft Blue design where the scene is the ever-changing existing courtyard life and the gates exist as three-dimensional frames that focus the view.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Carré Villa Redevelopment - Working with heritage</image:title>
<image:caption>Working within an existing building posed a new challenge for me. I hadn’t previously worked in a heritage site, let alone a national monument. We were able to show parts of the old structure and details in the new design but had to compensate for large deviations, crooked walls and sloping floors. It was part of the challenge to make this former Psychiatric Hospital with its vast spaces, into something that has the cosiness of a home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Carré Villa Redevelopment - Connecting spaces</image:title>
<image:caption>The structure of the building shows a clear historic division between large, high spaces meant for patients (voorhuis) and smaller secondary spaces facing out of the building (achterhuis). In-between were deep corridors over three floors which were now to be used in a similar way: to connect spaces. But now not just horizontally but also vertically.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Carré Villa Redevelopment - Part of a community</image:title>
<image:caption>The 450m2 row house is part of a larger redevelopment, putting forty four homes into the existing structure of the former psychiatric hospital ‘Meer en Berg’ in Bloemendaal, a village near the Dutch dunes. Reinvigorating the community spirit and self-sufficient character that set the institute apart, the inner courtyard features gardens, shared parking space and a large chimney that is to be used for barbeque parties. Indicated with nr. 26, the house has a south-facing garden with a large tree providing shade and privacy and an entrance in the middle of what was formerly the main corridor of the institute.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Carré Villa Redevelopment - Spreading movement & light throughout</image:title>
<image:caption>The main core of the house allows for both people and light to move throughout the house. Large openings in the loadbearing walls let light from the south-facing facade pour deeper into the house. Especially on the ground floor, where large steel pivot doors are aligned with both garden- and kitchen windows, one is allowed views from the park to the north to the garden on the south and with a view up to the top of the 15m high staircase. This staircase, with open steps in parts of its design, follows a unique path to evade windows and to allow for as much light to pass its massive structure.</image:caption>

With data from that specific stop the algorithm redesigned the bus stop to fit peak usage and to have users board the bus while covered from the rain.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The bus stop is one of the only static elements that supports bus infrastructure. It is an essential feature for people with disabilities and at the same time an opportunity to offer travellers with more comfort and services while waiting. Depending on the location (e.g. rural vs. urban) amenities that are available can change.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - 3D Concrete Printing - Launching customer</image:title>
<image:caption>RAPCAM Concrete found its first customer in Bruil Prefab Printing, a large concrete manufacturer who turned to 3D printing. Bruil´s custom version of RAPCAM, called BruilCAM´ supported them in their development from a small-scale laboratory environment to a full-sized factory layout with a large KUKA robot on a 34m (!) track. This allowed RAPCAM to develop into a full-fledged industrial 3D printing software package.</image:caption>
